Theresa Marko, PT, DPT, MS, is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic physical therapist & Certified Early Intervention Specialist with over 20 years of experience. She is the owner of Marko Physical Therapy, a private practice in New York City, specializing in spine, orthopedics, adolescents, and pediatrics. She has helped thousands of people to overcome injuries, optimize their movement, and return them to work and sports pain-free and better than ever.  Dr. Marko an adjunct faculty professor at Stony Brook University in New York and has spoken at Columbia University and Duke University about patient and physical therapy advocacy. She is a member of the editorial board of SpineUniverse as the first and only physical therapist on the board and also serves on the medical review board for Sleep Advisor.

Dr. Marko graduated with a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy from Simmons University in Boston in 1999 and went on to obtain her Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy from Des Moines University in Iowa.  Dr. Marko obtained her board certification in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS).  She also earned a specialty in Pediatrics, birth to three years old, as a Certified Early Intervention Specialist (CEIS) from the Massachusetts Department of Health.  Dr. Marko has the unique perspective of knowing how to help all people across the age spectrum.  Dr. Marko is also a Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Certified Golf Fitness Professional, which uses the body-swing connection™ to help improve your posture, swing, and extend the life of your golf game.  She is also Select Functional Movement Assessment, Level 1 certified, a movement based diagnostic system which systematically finds the cause of pain - not just the source - by logically breaking down dysfunctional movement patterns in the entire body.  Dr. Marko is licensed to practice in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts & Florida.

 

She brings over 20 years of experience to her practice, which includes a specialized knowledge base, reflective of her many post-graduate advanced training courses.  Her deep fascination with the body’s mechanics spurs her to continually learn new treatment techniques as well as new schools of thought on movement.

Dr. Marko is also interested in the advancement of medicine through technology and social media.  She enjoys teaching and passing on educational information through these forums to her patients.  She has received Social Media certifications from Hubspot and Hootsuite.

She has been a member of The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) since 1996 and has become an integral part of their advocacy team, fighting for physical therapy legislation on behalf of her patients and profession.  She is also a member of several sections of the APTA such as: Private Practice, Orthopaedic, Academy of Leadership & InnovationPelvic HealthPediatrics, as well as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists.  

 

Dr. Marko serves on the Private Practice Section’s Government Affairs Committee, the Practice Affairs Committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, and the Finance Committee of the APTA Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy.  She also served on APTA’s Public Policy & Advocacy Committee 2018-2021, which is an advisory group to the Board of Directors.  In her home state of New York, she was appointed the Federal Affairs Liaison and serves on the Public Policy Committee and the Nominating Committee for APTA New York.  Marko has been an elected delegate to APTA’s House of Delegates since 2019.  She is an editorial board member of SpineUniverse and is its first and only physical therapist on the board.  She wrote an article for the #PTtransforms blog entitled “Advocacy for Our Profession is not a Spectator Sport” where she explains the “why” of why advocacy is so important.  In 2022, Dr. Marko was selected as an official Spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association's Media Corps.

She remains up to date with the current Evidence-Based Medicine by attending yearly conferences and reading the current research published in medical journals.  She is also a volunteer for the New York City Medical Reserve Corp.

 

Dr. Marko's life-long search for a greater understanding of the body, along with her compassion, caring, and empathy makes her an exceptional caregiver who is admired and respected by many.  ​Her personal interests include: traveling, all things Foodie, baseball, comedy, human rights, advocacy, and French Bulldogs.
