GETTING THE MESSAGE OUT THERE
Dr. Theresa Marko, PT, DPT, MS, is the founder and owner of Marko Physical Therapy PLLC, a private practice in New York City specializing in orthopedics and adolescents. Dr. Marko is an adjunct professor at Touro University Manhattan and Tufts University Seattle and serves as an official Spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Media Corps. She has helped thousands of people overcome injuries, optimize their movement, and return to work and sports pain-free and better than ever.
Marko is a board-certified clinical specialist in orthopaedic physical therapy and a certified early intervention specialist from the Massachusetts Department of Health. She received a master’s degree in physical therapy and a doctor of physical therapy degree. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Interdisciplinary Leadership from Creighton University. Marko is also Titleist Performance Institute golf level 1 certified and Select Functional Movement Assessment level 1 certified. She has a certificate in health care leadership from LAMP Leadership Institute, a part of APTA’s Academy of Leadership and Innovation.
When not caring for patients, Dr. Marko can be found in legislative offices in Washington, D.C., or Albany, New York. She is passionate about making a change in health care and has made advocacy a cornerstone of her practice. She has lobbied on behalf of her patients and her profession on topics such as repealing the Medicare cap, reducing the student loan debt burden, and lowering copays. She formed public policy priorities during her time as a member of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Public Policy & Advocacy Committee.
Marko serves on the Private Practice Section’s Government Affairs Committee and the Finance Committee of the APTA Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy. She also served on APTA’s Public Policy & Advocacy Committee (2018-2021), an advisory group to the Board of Directors, as well as the practice affairs committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (2019-2023). In her home state of New York, she is appointed the Federal Affairs Liaison since 2019, serves on its Public Policy Committee, and is the Chairperson of the Nominating Committee. Marko has been an elected delegate to APTA’s House of Delegates since 2019.
In 2022, Marko was awarded the National Government Affairs Award by APTA, and in 2020, she was awarded the Doreen Frank Legislative Award by APTA New York for her outstanding advocacy work. She has spoken at several academic institutions about patient and physical therapy advocacy at the national level for APTA’s student advocacy events. She was awarded the Tracy Sawyer Public Relations Award in 2022 by APTA New York for fostering public awareness of the physical therapy profession through media utilization.
Dr. Marko’s expertise has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, U.S. News & World Report, HuffPost, PopSugar Fitness, Self, Cosmopolitan, and Business Insider. She sat on the editorial board of SpineUniverse as the first and only physical therapist on the board for three years. Dr. Marko is currently a member of the Medical Review Board for Verywell Health.
Currently, she lives in Rockaway Beach, NY, with her husband of 16 years and her French Bulldog, Rondo.
