APTA New York Members at APTA Capitol Hill Day 2025
Dr. Theresa Marko traded her clinic shoes for flip flops and hit the sand at Rockaway Beach to volunteer at Play It Forward’s Adaptive Surf NYC event. This inspiring day, organized by Wheeling Forward’s adaptive sports program, brought together people of all abilities to experience the thrill of riding the waves in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.
From sunrise setup to the final ride of the day, the beach was alive with energy. Adaptive surf participants, ranging from first timers to seasoned riders, were paired with professional surf instructors and dedicated volunteers who helped them paddle out, catch waves, and experience the joy of the ocean. Specialized adaptive equipment and safety gear ensured that everyone could participate comfortably and confidently.
Beyond the surfing itself, the event was a true community celebration. Music from a live DJ, a hospitality area with refreshments, and free lunch for all created a welcoming space where participants, families, and friends could connect. There were giveaways, plenty of cheering from the shore, and countless smiles that made the day unforgettable.
For Dr. Marko, participating in the event was about more than helping people enjoy the sport of surfing. It was about promoting inclusion, accessibility, and the belief that movement and recreation should be available to everyone, regardless of ability. As a physical therapist, she understands how powerful adaptive sports can be for building confidence, improving function, and fostering social connection.
Why Adaptive Sports Matter
Adaptive sports like surfing are more than just recreation. They are opportunities for people with disabilities to challenge themselves, experience freedom, and connect with others.
