Marko Physical Therapy is committed to empowering the next generation of physical therapists. We demonstrate our commitment by sending a student representative to attend the American Physical Therapy Association's (APTA) Capitol Hill Day, Tuesday, July 25, 2023.
This year we have selected the APTA New York Student Special Interest Group's Advocacy Chair, Kayleen Alvarado-Rodriguez. Kayleen is a 3rd year Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) student at Ithaca College.
APTA Capitol Hill Day: What it is and Why it Matters
APTA Capitol Hill Day is an annual event that brings together physical therapists and students from across the country to advocate for policies that impact the physical therapy profession. During this event, participants have the opportunity to meet with their elected officials to discuss important issues affecting the profession, such as access to care, reimbursement rates, and research funding.
Why APTA Capitol Hill Day is Important for the Physical Therapy Profession
APTA Capitol Hill Day is an important event for the physical therapy profession as it provides a platform for students and practitioners to advocate for policies that will improve patient care and advance the profession. By meeting with lawmakers and sharing their experiences and knowledge, participants can raise awareness of the importance of physical therapy and the impact that policies can have on patient care.
Impact on the Student: Personal and Professional Growth
Attending Capitol Hill Day will be a significant personal growth experience for our student representative. It is an opportunity to step outside their comfort zone, engage in advocacy work, and build their confidence as a future leader in the physical therapy profession.
The experience will also provide a valuable professional growth opportunity for our student representative. They will gain a deeper understanding of the issues affecting the physical therapy profession and how advocacy plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the field. Our student representative will also gain valuable networking skills and learn how to communicate effectively with policymakers and other stakeholders.
Mentorship Matters
Dr. Theresa Marko, PT, DPT, MS, Board-Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist is the Federal Affairs Liaison for APTA New York, who oversees federal legislation for the entire state. The APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) Federal Affairs Liaison is a position within the organization that involves advocating for the interests of physical therapists and the physical therapy profession at the federal level. The role of the Federal Affairs Liaison is to establish and maintain relationships with key policymakers, legislators, and government agencies to advance the goals and priorities of the APTA. Dr. Marko will offer mentorship to our student, guiding them on advocacy, best practices in lobbying, and the process of advocating for physical therapy bills currently under consideration in Congress.
The Significance of Investing in Future Leaders of Physical Therapy
Investing in the next generation of physical therapists is crucial for shaping the future of the field. Providing growth opportunities, mentorship, and networking opportunities can help young physical therapy professionals develop their skills and confidence as future leaders. Advocacy is an essential component of this process, and Marko PT remains committed to empowering and supporting future leaders in physical therapy.
We look forward to advocating for the profession of physical therapy with Kayleen!
