What Are Physical Therapy Specialties and Subspecialties?

Physical therapy offers many specialty areas, each focusing on specific patient needs, age groups, or types of conditions. Some physical therapists (PTs) choose to deepen their expertise by completing specialized training, residency programs, or advanced fellowship programs in subspecialty areas. This added experience and certification mean they can help people with unique or complex needs, from sports injuries to neurological conditions.

Specialty Areas in Physical Therapy

A PT with specialized training can provide targeted care for various conditions. The American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education accredits programs in areas such as:

  • Orthopedics: Treating musculoskeletal injuries like fractures or joint pain.

  • Neurology: Focusing on conditions like stroke, Parkinson’s, or multiple sclerosis.

  • Geriatrics: Addressing aging-related issues, including balance and mobility.

  • Sports: Supporting athletes through injury prevention and recovery.

  • Pediatrics: Helping children with developmental or movement issues.

PT residency programs take 10-18 months and equip therapists with advanced skills to treat patients in a specific area.

Advanced Subspecialties: Physical Therapy Fellowships

For PTs who are already board-certified, fellowship programs offer an even higher level of training in specific fields, such as:

  • Orthopedic Manual Therapy: Advanced hands-on techniques for joint and muscle pain.

  • Hand Therapy: Focused care for hand, wrist, and arm conditions.

  • Spine Care: Specialized approaches for spine injuries or chronic pain.

Finding the Right Physical Therapist for You

When choosing a PT, consider your specific needs. PTs with residency or fellowship training can be particularly beneficial for complex conditions or specialized care needs. The American Physical Therapy Association’s Find a PT tool helps you locate a therapist with the right expertise near you.

Remember, all licensed physical therapists are qualified to help you, but those with specializations bring additional, in-depth experience to their practice. PTs are movement experts dedicated to improving your quality of life through personalized care. And, in most cases, you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see one!
